Born in 1838, Lili'uokalani was trained by missionaries in Western academic disciplines and the ways of polite American society. A talented composer, Lili'uokalani wrote more than 165 songs, including "Aloha Oe," probably the most widely recognized Hawaiian song.
Following her succession to the throne in 1891, Lili'uokalani worked secretly to frame a new constitution that would restore power to native Hawaiians. A clash of interests ensued and the Hawaiian people soon lost their kingdom and she her throne. Lili'uokalani would live for another twenty years as an American citizen in the U.S. Territory of Hawaii. By the time of her death at the age of seventy-nine, she had become the embodiment of the kingdom itself--and of its loss.
